It can be difficult to find an affordable and spacious hotel room in Paris, especially if you are booking late. That was me in March, when I had to go to Paris on business on short notice. All the hotels around the conference center were booked out or did not make a good impression, so I looked around for a hotel with convenient access to public transport.
In the end, I found the Hotel Amastan, a small boutique hotel in Paris' fancy 8th district, located not far away from the famous Champs-Élysées. As I was booking so late, had to book the flexible rate due to company policy and of course wanted breakfast, the room ended up costing 250 Euros per night and 500 Euros total for a two night stay.

That was really up there for me in price but the ratings were good, the hotel looked hip and clean and the closest underground station "Saint-Philippe du Roule" was just 280 meters away; I was simply happy to get a room as I was running out of (clean and modern) options.
The staff throughout the hotel was friendly and tried their best to make my stay as comfortable as possible, which was unfortunately a bit frosty. The thermostat in my room was set to "cooling" and with the weather being grey and rainy I would have much preferred my room to be warm and cozy. However, staff were able to reset my thermostat remotely after a while on the first night. Unfortunately, I had to gr through the same process again the second evening.

The room itself was small, as many rooms are in Paris. Though tastefully decorated, I was taken aback at first by the size. However, there was a desk, a Bluetooth speaker, a coffee machine as well as complimentary coffee and water. The open bathroom was equipped with a sink, toilet and a shower and nice quality amenities by Sacha Juan as well as cotton swabs and pads. I also got a bathrobe, probably the most fluffy bathrobe I have ever had in a hotel. Due to the window, the room was bright and luminous and I had a nice view into the street below.
Shampoo HotelAmastan
The rain shower was a nice touch, though the water pressure and stream could have been more powerful. The shower was also on the smaller side and there was a shower curtain to prevent the water from getting everywhere, unfortunately, the curtain also tends to stick to you. A glass door would have been a more sophisticated solution.

The bedding was very nice and cozy and I slept well. Though the window was quite old, there was not too much noise getting through from the street, only in the morning you could hear a delivery truck passing by from time to time. The overall cleanliness in the hotel was actually alright and I appreciated that additional water bottles were provided by housekeeping. I also really enjoyed the small size of the hotel as well as the petrol color scheme, which gave the hotel a modern, Scandinavian vibe.

The breakfast room turns into a cocktail bar at night, so you have the choice to have your breakfast delivered to your room or take it downstairs at a large high table, with high chairs. As I was in a bit of a hurry, I had breakfast downstairs on both days. You actually get served a small menu with your name on it, which is a really nice touch, however the complimentary breakfast selection is rather limited. You can get more exciting food options, such as avocado toast or egg dishes, for a surcharge.

Included in the room price was a fresh fruit salad, a coffee, fresh orange juice, some bread and bread rolls with cheese and/or charcuterie as well as some pastries. Though all very nice, for the room price I would have expected a bit more selection and possible some eggs. Also, the seating arrangement on the high chairs was not very comfy and people were awkwardly spacing out along the table.

Hotel Amastan - Paris

IN

  • close to public transport, the Champs-Élysées and restaurants
  • modern boutique-style hotel
  • cozy room decor
  • nice bathroom amenities

or

OUT

  • expensive
  • breakfast room, which doubles as cocktail bar, with uncomfortable high chairs and one large table
  • limited breakfast selection with more exciting items only available at a surcharge
  • thermostat could not be manually switched from cooling to heating, could only be done remotely by reception staff
  • small room
  • shower curtain sticks to you while showering

Though overall a very nice, clean and modern hotel with certain great amenities and a good location, the price-performance ratio was for me not given. For the price of 250 Euros per night during the week, I would have hoped for a more spacious room and a better breakfast selection. The heating issue was also quite an inconvenience as I had to go through reception staff each time to effectively change the temperature in my room. Especially when you are booking ahead of time, you will be able to find better deals in Paris.
